ZELIENOPLE — Just because there's a price tag on it doesn't mean it's for sale.
Patrons of The Strand Art Gallery, located inside the Strand Theater's gift shop, will find wheel-thrown pottery created by Haine Middle School art club students this week.
Art teacher Noele Reynolds and 28 sixth grade art club students fired more than 40 pieces for the show and sale, running Monday to Wednesday.
"They are excited that this is their first show," said Reynolds of her students. "We love to show our stuff off."
For the show, club members created bowls, jugs and jars by molding clay on a pottery wheel.
Students used a lot of color, applied specialty glazes and embedded special glass crystals so no two pieces are the same, Reynolds said.
"It's pretty impressive, seeing as they've only been on the wheel twice."
The art fits perfectly into The Strand's vision for the gallery: exposing the community to independent works by local artists, said Ron Carter, executive director of The Strand Theater Initiative.
"Obviously, our goal is to revive The Strand as a performing arts center, but once the theater is done, we can picture these artists coming into the area," he said. With space available, Carter decided now is as good a time as any.
The gallery has been operating since Nov. 6, but the Haine art club will be the first group of students.
"We're very happy to have them because every artist should have some level of exposure," Carter said.
Reynolds will have 12 to 18 pieces on display and for sale, as well as clay magnets for $1 and clay jewelry for up to $30, in addition to student works, priced accordingly.
"But I don't know that they'll part with it," Reynolds said.
