Strand Theater group will showcase movies
Fee helps rehab of old Zelienople site
ZELIENOPLE — The Strand Theater Initiative for the fourth year is running
classic movies to help pay for its renovation project.
The borough's former movie theater at 119 N. Main St. has been vacant for more
than 20 years and has been undergoing renovations as the nonprofit group
continues working toward its revival as a performing arts, education and
community outreach center.
In honor of Pittsburgh hosting the All-Star Game, the Summer Classic Film Series
premieres with the baseball classic, "Field of Dreams" on Friday and
Saturday night. Start time is about 9:15 p.m., according to a Strand Theater
Initiative news release.
Subsequent films to be presented: Rocky (July 14-15), The Alamo starring John
Wayne (July 21-22), Batman (July 28-29), Back to the Future (Aug. 4-5), Toy
Story (Aug. 11-12), Arsenic and Old Lace with Cary Grant (Aug. 18), and Star
Trek VI, The Undiscovered Country (Aug. 25-26).
People need to take their own chairs. Movies are presented through a DVD
projector, four-speaker stereo sound system and an 18-by-13-foot screen attached
to the Strand's rear wall.
Suggested donation is $3 per person.
For information, contact Ron Carter, president of The Strand Theater Initiative
at 724-742-0400 or via e-mail at thestrand@zoominternet.net.
The donations are part of the money being collected to rehabilitate the theater.
The group already has more than $350,000 in private grants in a money market and
an additional $250,000 in grants will be released once a contract for the
state's $400,000 grant is signed.
